The Colli Euganei (colli means hills in italian )are indeed a natural oasis testifying to the historical and artistic importance of this region with its historic villages, villas, gardens, and monasteries. There are about one-hundred peaks with the highest being Monte Venda (601m). Considering the outstanding geomorphological and environmental characteristics, the entire area - about 18,700 hectares – was declared a Regional Park in 1989. The extraordinary position of the Euganei has allowed populations to settle here since the Lower Palaeolithic age, as demonstrated by numerous archaeological findings: at that time, the underlying plain was an immense wooded swamp, made liveable only thanks to medieval and Venetian reclamation works. |
